A "flat" loom is used to weave the cloth accessories below. This kind of loom, seen on the photo page, has been used for centuries to weave what are called "hair belts" or "xk'op"; in Tzutujil, the pronunciation of which is as bazaar as it looks. It is sort of like "shk-úp" with a weird brake between the "k"and "o". Hair belts are not commonly worn as they once were and the looms have being used to weave products such as you see below.

Beaded jewelry has been made in Santiago Atitlan for the last twenty to twenty five years. The popularity of beaded jewelry in the developed world has led to the employment of thousands in the area.
